HOW HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY CAN HELP
Giving your body back its lost hormones helps ease and often eliminate symptoms. There are commercially-available synthetic products. However, your body is unique and has specific needs. Personalized options are available through compounding.

SYNTHETIC HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT)
Pharmaceutical companies manufacture synthetic hormones available in pill, skin patch, gel, cream, or spray form. The most widely used HRT is a combination of estrogen and progesterone. Synthetic estrogen is an oral conjugated equine estrogen (such as Premarin) and Progestin (a synthetically produced hormone that differs in structure from the progesterone found in the body). The two are prescribed together because estrogen alone, when not balanced by progesterone, can stimulate the growth of the uterine lining, increasing the risk of uterine cancer. While often beneficial to millions of women, HRT is not without risk of severe side effects/illness.

BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE
Bio-identical hormone replacement is Dr. Megan’s specialty at Wellness Compounding Pharmacy.
Bio-identical hormones have a similar chemical and molecular structure as human hormones. For example, two commonly used hormones used to treat perimenopausal and postmenopausal hormone decline and imbalance are progesterone and estradiol. Progesterone refers to the hormone produced in the body (or produced from a plant source) that is chemically and structurally identical to human progesterone, therefore referred to as “bio-identical.” Bio-identical progesterone is simply progesterone. It is micronized (finely ground) for better absorption in the body. Bio-identical estrogens are 17 beta-estradiol, estrone, and estriol (estradiol is the form of estrogen that decreases at menopause).
The ingredients used at Wellness Compounding Pharmacy are FDA-approved. Your body recognizes them and allows them to mimic the function of the hormones your body produces on its own. Dr. Megan will thoroughly test your current hormone levels and, together with your physician, will develop a compounded BHRT just for you. Like traditional HRTs, bio-identical hormones may have certain risks, all of which will be carefully and thoroughly explained before your course of treatment begins. TREATABLE CAUSES & SYMPTOMS OF HORMONE IMBALANCE
Perimenopause
Women’s bodies begin to transition from the reproductive years at varying ages. The level of estrogen, the primary female hormone, often fluctuates during this time and can result in menopause-like symptoms: irregular periods and ovulation, fatigue, moodiness, as well as changes in libido, bone density, and cholesterol levels.
Menopause
While the onset age varies, when a woman experiences an entire year with no menstrual cycle, her body has reached menopause. While this is often a time of positive transition, hormonal disruption (loss of estrogen) may cause tiredness, energy loss, and sadness. Physical symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and weight gain.
Hysterectomy
A woman’s ovaries produce hormones, including estrogen. If her ovaries are removed, post-surgical symptoms mimic menopause, even when the patient is younger than the typical menopausal age.
Low Testosterone
Testosterone is to men what estrogen is to women. Deficient testosterone levels in men may affect sexuality, reproduction, muscle mass, mood, sleep, and bone density.
Low testosterone in women can show symptoms of low libido, fatigue, and slow metabolism, to name a few.
High Testosterone
High Testosterone levels can present with symptoms such as aggression, moodiness, and excess facial hair. Counterintuitively, women can also experience high testosterone, which may lead to a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is quite common in younger women. PCOS can be difficult to diagnose.
Hypothyroidism
Also called underactive thyroid disease, hyperthyroidism is a common disorder. With hypothyroidism, your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. When you do not have enough thyroid hormone, your body processes slow down, resulting in less energy and a sluggish metabolism.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
PMDD is a severe form of Premenstrual Syndrome. Those who suffer from PMDD may experience physical changes, including tiredness, bloating, breast tenderness, irritability, sadness, and extreme moodiness.
